In addition to technical skills, the course covers essential expedition planning components such as gear selection, food and fuel management, and establishing efficient camps in a verity of conditions. Participants will learn to work effectively as a team, develop resilience, and adapt to the demands of prolonged travel in the Alpine.

Prerequisites for this 6-Day Ski Expedition Skills Course
Backcountry Skiing Experience:
Participants should have prior experience with ski touring or splitboarding, including proficiency with skinning, uphill travel, and transitions.
Ability to ski confidently in variable snow conditions on ungroomed terrain.
Physical Fitness:
A high level of fitness is required to endure sustained physical effort, including multiple days of uphill travel, carrying a heavy pack, and skiing challenging terrain.
Participants should be capable of 6–8 hours of continuous activity per day with elevation gains of 3,000–5,000 feet.
3. Essential Gear and Skills:
Participants should bring appropriate backcountry ski or splitboard equipment, including skis/splitboard, skins, boots, poles, and avalanche safety gear.
Ability to efficiently manage gear transitions and pack effectively for multi-day travel.
4. Comfort in Cold and Remote Environments:
Willingness to spend consecutive nights in backcountry camps, potentially in harsh weather conditions, with the bare alpine necessities of life.
5. Solid Teamwork & Communication Skills:
A collaborative mindset, adaptability, and a willingness to work as part of a group are essential for a successful expedition experience.

Ski Expedition Skills Training Itinerary
Day 1 – Gear Check & Approach to Camp
Meet in Mount Shasta town for gear check and final outfitting in town.
Drive to Trail Head
Ski/hike to establish a high camp carrying full loads
Instruction en route: efficient skinning, pack management.
Afternoon: camp craft in an expedition context. Tent platforms, snow walls, group kitchen construction, water production systems, waste disposal.
Evening orientation: objectives for the week and the expedition mindset
Day 2 – Snow Climbing & Movement Skills
Morning technical session: crampon and ice axe proficiency (self-arrest, French/German technique, front pointing, step cutting, and plunge stepping)
Movement efficiency drills on Shasta’s snow slopes with heavy packs
Afternoon ski tour above camp focusing on line choice, uphill strategies, and efficient transitions
Evening camp session: expedition cooking systems (fuel management, cold-weather food prep, and group kitchen workflow)
Day 3 – Ropes & Glacier Travel Systems
Instruction: knots, rope management, snow anchors, belays, and team rope travel
Practice glacier-style rope spacing, running belays, and transitions between climbing and skiing
Scenario-based training: Crevasse rescue systems overview
Lay out a simple crevasse rescue system. Look at it & talk about it.
Day 4 – More Glacier Travel and Technical Systems
Snow anchor practice & refinement
Crevasse rescue
Student led scenarios
Spend the entire day on crevasse rescue scenarios, make valuable mistakes and learn from them.
Day 5 – Camp Breakdown & Exit
Morning: Morning ski tour (optional)
Break down camp with efficient packing and Leave No Trace considerations.
