Mike Henry

Owner & Lead Guide

A man wearing sunglasses and outdoor gear stands on a snowy mountain ridge with snow-capped peaks in the background during daytime.

Mike’s story in the mountains is one of curiosity that grew into a calling. What began as a strong desire to chase snow, climb peaks, and explore the wild spaces quickly transformed into a lifelong pursuit of learning, teaching, and guiding others through the wide open spaces of planet earth. Over the years, Mike has poured himself into the craft of mountaineering, climbing and splitboarding while building the technical skills, judgment, and patience that come only from years in the alpine.

For Mike, guiding is more than reaching summits—it’s about creating experiences that are both safe and transformative. He believes the mountains are one of the best classrooms in the world, where lessons in teamwork, resilience, and creativity come naturally with every step. Whether it’s introducing someone to their first crampon steps on firm spring snow, leading a multi-day expedition in the Sierra backcountry, or carving turns down a classic volcano, Mike finds great value in helping people discover what they’re capable of in big, beautiful landscapes.

Based in the Sierra Nevada Range of California but drawn to the Cascades, Alaska, and beyond, Mike continues to grow as both a human being, professional guide and athlete.

His vision for Sierra Nevada Backcountry Guides is simple: to share the knowledge, stoke, and respect for the alpine that the mountains have given him, and to help others step into their own adventures with confidence.
