This Intro to Rock Climbing course is designed for individuals who are new to the sport or seeking to enhance their foundational skills. Over the duration of the course, participants will gain essential knowledge and practical experience in both indoor and outdoor climbing environments.

By the end of the course, participants will possess the skills and confidence to continue their climbing journey in an outdoor climbing setting. Join us to embark on an exciting path into the world of rock climbing.

  • Goals:

    1. Safety Awareness: Understand the essential safety practices and protocols for outdoor climbing, including hazard recognition and risk management.

    2. Basic Climbing Techniques: Introduce fundamental climbing techniques such as footwork, body positioning, and handholds to enhance climbing efficiency.

    3. Equipment Familiarization: Gain knowledge of the necessary climbing gear, including harnesses, ropes, carabiners, and protective equipment, as well as how to properly use and maintain them.

    4. Belaying Skills: Learn proper belaying techniques to ensure climber safety and effective rope management.

    5. Climbing Ethics and Leave No Trace Principles: Instill an understanding of responsible climbing practices, including environmental stewardship and respect for natural areas.

    6. Route Identification and Navigation: Develop skills to read basic climbing routes, recognize technical ratings, and navigate outdoor climbing areas confidently.

    7. Goal Setting and Personal Progression: Help participants set personal climbing goals and develop a plan for continuous improvement and skill advancement.

    Outcomes:

    1. Basic Climbing Skills: Participants will learn essential climbing techniques, including footwork, body positioning, and movement patterns. By the end of the course, climbers will be able to navigate top-rope routes with confidence and efficiency.

    2. Safety and Risk Management: Students will gain an understanding of critical safety practices, including how to properly wear a harness, utilize climbing gear, and conduct pre-climb checks. Formal instruction of these skills will ensure climbers can assess risks and make informed decisions while on the rock.

    3. Climbing Protocols and Etiquette: Participants will be introduced to climbing area etiquette, including proper communication with climbing partners and respect for the environment. This knowledge promotes a positive community within the climbing culture.

    4. Belaying Techniques: Participants will acquire the skills necessary to safely belay a climber. This includes understanding the mechanics of belay systems, as well as how to catch falls and lower climbers safely.

    5. Topography and Route Reading: Students will learn how to interpret rock formations and read climbing routes. By understanding the characteristics of the rock and the layout of the climbs, participants will improve their route selection and climbing efficiency.

    Note: Overall, participants will emerge from the Intro to Outdoor Rock Climbing Course prepared to safely explore the climbing world with the skills and knowledge necessary for enjoyable and responsible outdoor experiences.

  • 8:00am - Meet your guide at designated area predetermined by your guide. Go through gear check, and review the plan for the day.

    8:45am - Walk to the crag and begin skills for the day.

    Noon - We’ll sit down for lunch at the crag and refuel for the second half of the day.

    12:30pm - We will continue climbing for the remainder of the day.

    4:30pm - Finish the day, back to parking lot and say our good byes

    • This is an introductory course - No previous rock climbing experience required!

    • Basic - Moderate fitness level - You should be able to do basic body movements that are necessary for outdoor rock climbing.

    • Good attitude & ready to learn: Rock climbing is a fun, sometimes difficult challenge that requires pushing past fears and keeping a positive attitude.
